Battle of the eyeliners: Stila Vs Kat Von D

untitled

Before I get onto this review, let me rewind to a few months ago when I discovered that my holy grail Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner had been discontinued. After genuinely throwing a little tantrum over it I decided I needed to find an alternative and I needed it quick as my eyeliner was fast running out. Mind you, this was before Urban Decay released the Razor Sharp Liquid Eye Liner (which I still need to try), I opted for two liners that have been on my wishlist for a while. The Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner and the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, which has just recently been release in the UK!

Both of these products are very well reviewed, Stila boasts a 4.3 rating on MakeUpAlley and Kat Von D a 4.1, so I was really looking forward to trying them out. I bought the Stila liner (0.5ml) from FeelUnique for £13 and Kat Von D (0.55ml) from Debenhams for £16.

Both products are liquid eyeliners with a felt tip pen, thus being perfect for those who are beginners and perfect for the purpose of this review! I’ll be comparing the products on a number of points.

———————-

Brush end: Both liners have a brush end like a felt-tip pen. When you compare both side by side you can see that the Stila liner isn’t as smooth as the Kat Von D marker. The Kat Von D brush end is very flexible making it easier to use. I found that over time the Stila liner became frayed which made application jagged.

Application: Both products require you to shake them before application, I feel like the Kat Von D liner dispenses product more evenly and with more pigmentation that the Stila liner. I had to go over the Stila line numerous times to get the correct pigmentation and also the marker end became frayed after a few uses. This fraying led to the liner appear jagged when I applied it. The Kat Von D liner didn’t change over time and personally I find application of the Kav Von D liner much easier.

Pigmentation and finish: Both of these eyeliners are very pigmented, in fact I’d say they’re both equally black. However, when it dries down the Stila eyeliner has a matte finish and the Kav Von D liner has a shinier finish. Personally I prefer the shiny finish. The Kat Von D liner appears cleaner and sharper to me compared to the Stila liner which bleeds and spreads into the lines on the back of my hand/ eyelids.

Longevity: I tested both eyeliners with the Urban Decay primer potion underneath and checked in on my eyes over the course of a working day. Both eyeliners looked pretty good by the end of the day (14+ hours wear). The Kat Von D liner looked almost exactly the same but I found that there was a bit of fading/smudging with the Stila liner. Overall, I found that the colour on both eyeliners remained vivid and black whilst there was no flaking at all.

Waterproof-ness and removal: Both eyeliners come off easily with an oil based cleanser. I much prefer the removal of the Stila liner, the Kat Von D liner left a bit of residue and requires a bit more work.

———————-

After testing both of these liners for a couple of days I have to say my decision on which product won this battle was pretty easy. I much preferred the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner. It may be the more expensive of the two but it has a better brush end, applies easier, gives a clean pigmented line and has my preferred finish, despite being a little bit more difficult to take off. I’ve also noticed that the Stila liner has started drying out very quickly, so overall it probably isn’t that great value for money anyway!

If you have any other eyeliner suggestions that you think I will like or want me to test, let me know. Also I’d like to know, have you tried any of these products yourself? What did you think of them? Comment below 🙂

Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner (Perversion) – Review

I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect liquid eyeliner for practically the last 8 years. I’ve tried products right from the drug store through to the high end and I decided to try this eyeliner because it gets a lot of love within the beauty community. I picked this up at John Lewis and it cost me £14.

This eyeliner comes with a tapered brush tip, it is VERY fine which allows for precision when applying the eyeliner. The formula of the product is quite wet (make sure you shake the bottle before use), it applies smoothly and opaquely on the lid. I’m no expert with liquid liners  but this one was very easy to use and I only re-dipped the brush in once to achieve my desired cat-eye look. Initially the product dries shiny, but after drying fully it has a matte finish. Furthermore, the colour is a truly deep dark black.

The two pictures on the left show the eyeliner immediately after application before it has dried. The two on the right are after 12 hours.

I wore the eyeliner over the Elf Eyelid primer as I always do and there was absolutely NO smudging after a full days wear. I travelled on the London Underground, wind and rain blew in my face, my skin became oily and nothing made this smudge or flake.

The best part of the eyeliner is the removal. Now I’m very fussy about eye make-up removal. I don’t like using harsh chemical removers or tugging at my eyelids. This eyeliner however just peels off when I hold a warm muslin cloth over my eyes.

Hands down this is the BEST eyeliner I have ever used so far and I fully understand why it gets so much hype on the interwebs. It doesn’t break the bank unlike other high-end eyeliners, it applies like a dream, doesn’t smudge or flake and it removes easily.

Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Gel Eyeliner (Black) Vs. Inglot AMC Matte Eyeliner Gel (77)

Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Gel Eyeliner (Black) Vs. Inglot AMC Matte Eyeliner Gel (77)

I’ve been seeing a lot of hype about these two liners all over the interwebs so I’ve decided to put them to the test and see who wins the battle of the gel eyeliners!

Price and availability:

I bought the Rimmel eyeliner from Boots on sale for £4.99 and it comes with a little brush. I don’t find this brush very useful so I won’t be using it for the purpose of this test, either way it’s a nice thing to have. As far as I know there are no stores that stock Inglot in England so you have to order online. This eyeliner costs £10.00 and it doesn’t come with a brush. Rimmel comes with 2.4g of product and Inglot with 5.5g.

Application:

Both these eyeliners are extremely creamy. I found that the Rimmel eyeliner applied more smoothly. The Inglot eyeliner dried quicker.

Appearance:

Both of these liners have a matte finish. I think what makes the Inglot gel liner so popular is probably the appearance once it is applied. It is the deepest, darkest black colour I have ever seen. The Rimmel eyeliner is also very black, just not as black as the Inglot liner.

Waterproof:

Both eyeliners are equally water proof but come off easily with facial wash.

Smudge proof:

I have oily lids so this part of the test if very important to me. The Rimmel eyeliner lasted nearly five hours before smudging. The Inglot eyeliner was incredibly smudgy. After just two hours it had smudged on my eyelid and the inner and outer corner of my eyes- not good 😦

Overall verdict

Overall I’m going to have to give this one to the Rimmel Scandaleyes gel liner. It applies better and last longer. I really wish the Inglot liner was smudge proof because it really is the perfect black colour.

KOJI Dolly Wink Liquid Eyeliner – Review

I’ve been meaning to try this eyeliner for years and I finally got my hands on it! I bought it from YesStylefor £11.90.

Dolly Wink from KOJI is a deep, dazzling black eyeliner with an ultra fine, yet flexible tip for ease and precise application. Waterproof and sweat proof, the liquid eyeliner comes with a quick dry formula to prevent smudges and smears. Long wearing and with an intense shade, eyes are enhanced and defined for hours on end, without need of touch-ups.

The packaging is cute and pink. The pen itself is pink with a black top. I think it has a small ball inside the pen to aid in distribution of the product.

IMG_1594The tip of the eyeliner is made of many tiny fibres which have been tapered to a very fine tip. This allows the pen to be very flexible and get close to the lashes, whilst maintaining the shape of the tip.

You can achieve different levels of thickness with this eyeliner

The eyeliner applies extremely smoothly but the colour isn’t as black or dark as I would have liked it to be. You need to apply quite a few layers to achieve an opaque black line which can be time consuming. The formula is very light weight and comfortable and it isn’t drying so it doesn’t clump at all. The finish is semi matte.

I’ve got very oily lids, so after 4 hours I saw a tiny bit of smudging under my eyes which wiped away very easily. There was a tiny bit of fading over the 12 hours but overall the line stayed pretty solid and performs better than any other liquid eyeliner I’ve used before. Removal of this eyeliner was the best part for me. I’m not a fan of tugging at my eyelids to remove long-wear make-up, but this literally comes off with a wipe of hot water!

I really like this eyeliner as an everyday day product and I will probably buy it again. It is long wearing, light-weight, gives a polished look and removes very easily. The only down side was the lack of intensity of the colour but I think I’ll use this more for when I just want to line my lashes with a thin line instead of when I want to do a full cat-eye liner.

Edit 1. I tried the eyeliner again with Elf’s Eyelid Primer and the colour pay-off was awesome and there was no smudging. So if you’re going to buy this use a primer first 🙂
